The Domain Architect (IT Domain) operates at the intersection of Enterprise Architecture and Solution Architecture. In large organizations, the enterprise landscape is too complex to manage transformation end to end without segmentation. The Domain Architect bridges this gap by taking responsibility for the architecture of the business capabilities assigned to a Domain (e.g., HR, Finance, Customer, Transport…), ensuring that strategic direction is translated into coherent, actionable architectural guidance.
The Domain Architect has deep knowledge of the business and IT context of their domain and acts as the link between high level enterprise direction and concrete solution designs. He/She ensures compliance with enterprise principles, drives alignment across initiatives, and defines the domain specific principles, services, and functions that guide solution architects and delivery teams.
You work closely with business stakeholders, Portfolio Management, Enterprise Architects, and Solution Architects to shape domain roadmaps, steer domain level transformation, and ensure that solutions fit within the broader enterprise capability and technology landscape.
Your Mission
Build and steer a clear, consistent, and future proof architecture for your IT Domain, ensuring that domain transformations align with enterprise strategy, target architectures, and architectural standards.
You will:
1) Shape & Own the IT-Domain Architecture
Develop and maintain the Domain Architecture, translating enterprise strategy into domain specific structures, principles, and architectural patterns.
Define and maintain the capabilities and related operating model of the IT-domain and making the bridge with the organisation, the processes, technology & data with a focus on IT4IT.
Ensure that domain specific architecture decisions remain compliant with enterprise architecture guardrails and principles.
2) Drive IT-Domain Roadmaps & Transformation
Co create multi year domain roadmaps with business stakeholders and Portfolio Management.
Translate functional and non functional requirements into architecture evolution paths that modernize and optimize the domain’s digital landscape.
Identify and prioritize transformation opportunities aligned with enterprise vision and capability evolution.
3) Ensure Architectural Alignment Across Projects
Provide architectural guidance for major initiatives within the domain, ensuring alignment with target architectures and domain principles.
Collaborate with Solution Architects to ensure consistent solution patterns, coherent information flows, and integration with adjacent domains.
Conduct early architectural validation and guide teams toward scalable, secure, and compliant design choices.
4) Embed Lifecycle, Quality & Governance
Monitor application and technology lifecycle within your domain and propose necessary upgrades, replacements, or rationalization (e.g., TIME assessments).
Support vendor and solution selection decisions by ensuring alignment with domain and enterprise standards.
Promote structured, high quality architectural practices across delivery teams.
5) Bridge Business Strategy & IT Execution
Link the corporate capability map to the processes, data, and systems that realise them.
Apply frameworks such as IT4IT, ITIL, and TBM to translate operating models into domain specific capabilities and IT services.
Balance long term strategic direction with pragmatic delivery guidance for programs and teams.
Modern Delivery & Collaboration Context
As a Domain Architect, you collaborate across a matrix of Enterprise Architects, Solution Architects, engineering teams, and operational leaders.
You drive and prepare the architectural landscape for modern delivery practices and SIAM based collaboration models, ensuring that architecture principles, patterns, and guardrails are understood and can embedded, and consistently applied throughout delivery.
